The Modern Paradox : A Poem By Kawsar Ahamed

The Modern Paradox

– Kawsar Ahamed

In this modern society, what’s going wrong?
What is missing? Is it religiousness or simply belonging?
Is it values we’ve lost or the love that’s gone cold?
Is it wisdom, now traded for stories untold?

Has kindness been buried under layers of pride?
Or has truth been forgotten, now easily denied?
Are we chasing success, while integrity fades?
Building our futures on shallow charades?

Is it respect, lost to wealth’s steady rise?
Or compassion, now hidden behind all the lies?
Are we too busy to care, too blind to see,
The consequences of a life that’s led by greed?

In this world of excess, where do we stand?
Are we seeking answers or just a helping hand?
In the rush for progress, have we lost our way?
Forgetting the roots that made us who we are today.

Money is everything, respect is nothing,
Idols are idolized, parents are forgotten,
Knowledge is compromised, power is won,
Appearance is prized, character is gone.

Success is measured by wealth, not integrity,
Ambition is fueled by greed, not humility,
Love is conditional, trust is rare,
Honesty is lost, deceit fills the air.

Tradition is abandoned, convenience is king,
Freedom is fleeting, control is the thing,
Compassion is weak, competition is strong,
Truth is ignored, the lie lasts long.

Here is the modernization we have made:

Clothes became shorter, so where will shame come from?
Bread turned into loaves, so where will strength come from?
Flowers became plastic, so where will fragrance come from?
Faces became about makeup, so where will beauty come from?
Students became dependent on tuition, so where will knowledge come from?
Food came from hotels, so where will health come from?
And humans became all about money, so where will love come from?
Water turned into bottles, so where will rivers come from?
Farms turned into factories, so where will crops come from?
Homes became concrete, so where will warmth come from?
Festivals became formalities, so where will joy come from?
Books became digital, so where will wisdom come from?
Time became fleeting, so where will bonds come from?
Dreams became material, so where will peace come from?
And hearts became selfish, so where will kindness come from?

Jobs became positions, so where will passion come from?
Words became hashtags, so where will meaning come from?
Values became negotiable, so where will integrity come from?
Privacy became public, so where will trust come from?
Families became distant, so where will love come from?
Social media became reality, so where will authenticity come from?
People became consumers, so where will empathy come from?
And lives became schedules, so where will freedom come from?

Relationships became transactional, so where will true emotion come from?
Cheating became a choice, so where will true love come from?
Governments became corrupted, so where will democracy come from?
Judges became corrupt, so where will justice come from?
Leaders became self-serving, so where will leadership come from?
Law became flexible, so where will fairness come from?
The poor became voiceless, so where will equality come from?
The rich became untouchable, so where will compassion come from?

Then what’s exactly missing in modern society? Where to find the solutions?
Why are we becoming so insane, running after materialistic things that won’t work at the end of our lives?
Alas! The modern, oversmart, overrich, and aesthetic society doesn’t even know where it is going, or where to stop.
But we all know we are heading to our end, the Earth is heading to its death,
Though we know, we pretend as if no god exists, or as if we won’t die.

Summary:

The Modern Paradox is a reflective poem that critiques the rapid transformation in society driven by modernization and materialism. The poem questions the loss of essential values such as kindness, wisdom, and integrity, as society places more importance on wealth, appearance, and power. It presents a world where superficial ideals have replaced deep-rooted virtues, and where humans are increasingly disconnected from their true emotions and responsibilities. The poem mourns the loss of traditions, the neglect of relationships, and the rise of greed. Ultimately, it portrays a society that has forgotten its roots, opting for quick gratification and neglecting the consequences of a life led by materialistic pursuits. The poem ends with a somber reflection on humanity’s inevitable downfall, questioning the very essence of progress and whether we can find a way to reverse the damage.

Literary Analysis:

The Modern Paradox blends philosophical musings with societal critique, creating a narrative that explores the tensions between progress and loss. Through its structure and tone, the poem evokes a sense of urgency and disillusionment, calling attention to the moral decay that accompanies the pursuit of material success.

Themes:

  1. Loss of Values: The poem highlights how core values such as respect, kindness, integrity, and wisdom have been overshadowed by the quest for wealth, appearance, and status. It emphasizes the abandonment of traditional ideals in favor of modern convenience and consumption.
  2. Superficiality and Materialism: The poem critiques the superficial nature of contemporary society, where appearance is prioritized over substance. It reflects on how consumerism, technology, and social media have distorted human priorities and relationships.
  3. The Corruption of Society: The poet addresses various social issues, from the corrupting influence of money on politics and law to the loss of family values and authenticity. It paints a bleak picture of societal systems where power and wealth are prioritized over justice, equality, and compassion.
  4. Nostalgia for the Past: The poem contrasts modern society with past traditions, suggesting that the shift toward materialism and convenience has resulted in a loss of essential qualities that once defined human connection and progress.
  5. Inevitable Decline: In the closing stanzas, the poem reflects on the inevitability of societal collapse due to the unchecked pursuit of materialism. The poet suggests that while society may deny the consequences, it is ultimately heading toward self-destruction, both on an individual and global scale.

Literary Devices:

  1. Rhetorical Questions: The poem uses a series of rhetorical questions to challenge the reader’s assumptions and provoke deep reflection on modern society. Questions like “Where will shame come from?” and “Where will love come from?” highlight the disconnect between the values we once held dear and the reality we now face.
  2. Contrast: The poem contrasts modern ideals with traditional values, as well as superficial traits with deeper virtues. This contrast is evident in lines like “Knowledge is compromised, power is won” and “Appearance is prized, character is gone,” where societal shifts are highlighted.
  3. Alliteration: The use of alliteration in phrases like “Success is measured by wealth, not integrity” and “Faces became about makeup, so where will beauty come from?” reinforces the poem’s rhythmic flow and emphasizes the loss of deeper values.
  4. Imagery: The poem is rich in vivid imagery, such as “Water turned into bottles, so where will rivers come from?” and “Homes became concrete, so where will warmth come from?” These images emphasize the dehumanization and environmental degradation caused by unchecked industrialization.
  5. Anaphora: The repetition of “so where will…” throughout the poem serves to underline the consequences of modern society’s choices and creates a sense of inevitable collapse. This repetition also serves as a call for introspection, urging the reader to question where these changes are leading.
  6. Irony: The poem employs irony in the contrast between the promises of modernity and the reality of its effects. For example, the modernization that promises progress often leads to greater societal disconnect, making the modern world appear as both a paradox and a failure of true progress.
  7. Tone: The tone of the poem is reflective, critical, and somber. The poet questions the direction in which society is headed and expresses deep concern about the loss of essential human values in the face of progress and materialism.

Conclusion:

The Modern Paradox serves as a profound commentary on the state of contemporary society. It critiques the blind pursuit of material success and the loss of moral values, highlighting the consequences of a world that prioritizes convenience over authenticity. The poem is a call for reflection, urging readers to recognize the dangers of unchecked progress and to reconsider what truly matters in life. Through its evocative language, imagery, and use of literary devices, it offers a powerful commentary on the state of modernity and its impact on the individual and society at large.
