A Love Lost in Silence – Poem By Kawsar Ahamed

A Love Lost in Silence

By Kawsar Ahamed

I watched you from afar, shy and unsure,
Your beauty struck me, simple and pure.
A friend whispered my heart in your ear,
Wrote my confession for the world to hear.

We started to chat, slow and sweet,
You, my junior, made my heart skip a beat.
Your laughter, your words, they pulled me in,
But I stood on the edge, too scared to begin.

I spoke of love, but not with my soul,
Unsure if this feeling was truly whole.
Days drifted by, romantic yet cold,
A fragile story left untold.

Then came the post, “A day to remember,”
A moment of beauty I tried to capture.
A girl, a photo, just a fleeting scene,
But to you, it shattered what might have been.

“Who is she?” you asked, your heart in pain,
“Why don’t you call, why don’t you explain?”
I stumbled on words, though I meant no wrong,
But your trust was gone, the bond not strong.

I never knew how much you cared,
Until the moment, all was bared.
You called, I missed, the silence grew,
And all my truths felt false to you.

Now I sit, heart heavy with regret,
For the love that bloomed but never met.
Too late, I feel, too late, I see,
What you could’ve been to me.

A love so close, yet miles apart,
A tragic ending before the start.
Though feelings linger, we drift away,
In silence, where love couldn’t stay.

Summary of “A Love Lost in Silence”
The poem explores a tragic love story marked by hesitation, miscommunication, and missed opportunities. It begins with a shy man harboring feelings for a girl but being unable to confess them directly. A friend steps in to express his emotions, but the confession lacks depth and doesn’t fully convey the man’s true feelings.
Intrigued by the confession, the girl engages in conversation with the man, and they begin a slow, cautious interaction through texts. However, despite their communication, the man remains uncertain about his emotions, and their connection is fragile. A turning point comes when the man, a photographer, shares a photo of another girl on social media, captioned “A day to remember.” This innocent act creates a misunderstanding. The girl he likes misinterprets the post, questioning his loyalty and losing trust. Though the man tries to explain, his words fail to repair the emotional damage. As time goes on, they continue chatting, but the relationship begins to drift apart. The man only realizes the girl’s true significance too late, regretting his missed chance to nurture their bond. In the end, the girl makes one final attempt to reconnect by calling him, but due to a missed call, the moment to resolve their issues is lost. Silence takes over where love once had a chance to grow, leading to a tragic conclusion where feelings remain, but the relationship ends before it truly begins.

Analysis for Better Understanding:
The poem, “A Love Lost in Silence,” explores the themes of love, miscommunication, regret, and emotional vulnerability. Through its narrative, the poem highlights the fragility of human relationships and how small misunderstandings can lead to profound heartbreak. Narrative Structure & Tone
The poem is written in a first-person perspective, offering an intimate view of the speaker’s emotional journey. It unfolds a romantic relationship that begins with unspoken admiration, progresses to hesitant communication, and ultimately disintegrates due to miscommunication and mistrust. The tone of the poem evolves from hopeful and tender to one of regret and sorrow.

Themes & Symbolism
1. Uncertainty in Love: The speaker’s uncertainty about his own feelings is a major theme. He confesses his love but remains emotionally distant, unsure if what he feels is real. This ambivalence is symbolized by the speaker’s hesitation to fully commit to the relationship, creating an emotional barrier between the lovers.
2. Miscommunication: The poem illustrates how love can falter due to poor communication. The pivotal moment—when the speaker posts a photo with the caption “A day to remember”—becomes a symbol of the misunderstanding that breaks the fragile trust. The simple act of sharing a memory is interpreted differently, highlighting how actions can be misunderstood, leading to unnecessary pain.
3. Trust & Betrayal: The emotional climax of the poem is the perceived betrayal. The girl interprets the post as evidence of disloyalty, despite the speaker’s innocent intentions. This theme reflects how fragile trust can be in romantic relationships, especially when insecurities arise.
4. Regret and Lost Opportunities: As the relationship crumbles, the speaker is consumed with regret, a feeling echoed in lines like, “Too late, I feel, too late, I see, What you could’ve been to me.” The speaker realizes his love only after it’s too late, which deepens the sense of tragedy and loss.

Literary Devices
1. Imagery: The poem is rich in imagery that evokes both emotional and visual responses. Phrases like “Your beauty struck me, simple and pure” and “A girl, a photo, just a fleeting scene” vividly paint the emotional landscape, helping readers visualize the speaker’s admiration and the moment of misunderstanding.
2. Symbolism:
– The photo and its caption, “A day to remember,” symbolize both the literal moment captured and the emotional chaos that follows.
– Silence becomes a metaphor for emotional distance and the lack of communication between the lovers.
3. Repetition: The phrase “too late” is repeated in the final stanza, emphasizing the speaker’s regret and the irreversible nature of missed opportunities.
4. Contrast: The poem contrasts the internal emotions of love and doubt with external actions that lead to misunderstanding. The speaker’s love remains unspoken or understated, while the outward gestures—such as the social media post—carry unintended consequences.

Conclusion
“A Love Lost in Silence” uses the journey of a shy man’s confession and the subsequent breakdown of the relationship to illustrate the fragility of love when communication fails. The poem’s emotional depth lies in its exploration of how misunderstandings can undo affection and how, tragically, people may come to realize their love only when it’s already too late. The irony of the situation—where the speaker’s intentions are pure, but they are perceived as betrayal—adds a layer of tragic inevitability, making the poem a poignant reflection on love, loss, and regret.
